The Health care industry consists of hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, offices of physicians, offices of dentists, home health care services, outpatient care centers, ambulatory health care services, medical and diagnostic laboroaortories.
Many workers in the health care industry are on part-time schedules. Many health care establishments work around the clock and need staff at all hours. Shift work is common in some occupation, such as nursing. Usually health care workers involve in direct patient care and need to take precaution from back strain; minimize exposure to radiation and caustic chemicals; and guard against infectious disease AIDS, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Workers in health care tend to be older than those in other industries. Most of them remain employed in the same occupation, because of the high level of educational and training required for many health occupations.
Health care firms employ large number of workers in professional and service occupations. Professional occupations, such as physicians and surgeons, dentists, registered nurses, social workers, and physical therapists, usually require a bachelor’s degree in a specific health field. They often have high level of responsibility, and in addition to their service, they supervise other workers or conduct research. They are graduates with 1-2 years of training. The jobs usually require specific formal training beyond high school, but less than 4 years of college. Most workers in health care provide clinical services, but are also employed with other functions. Some of the workers are nursing aides, building cleaning workers, dental assistants, medical assistants, and personal and home care aides with little or no specialized education. With experience and later with further education and training they may be promotes or transferred to new occupations. Normally organizations run smoothly with workers in management and administrative jobs. These medical and health service managers have a background or training in health care administration, but some of them enter these jobs with a general business education.
