Significance

Since the research manager, or his department, is the only one who focuses on actions of the consumer, an important part of the research manager's job description is including everyone's input when developing questionnaires for research projects. The brand and advertising departments might want to include questions related to brand and advertising awareness among customers, while product development might be more interested in how the customer rates quality. Whatever the case, the research manager's main job is developing a highly usable questionnaire for all major studies. However, research managers will often get help on the questionnaire from a marketing research agency, which usually fields the survey through experienced survey professionals.

Function

The research manager's job description often entails handling many primary or secondary research projects simultaneously. Most of the time, the research manager contacts a marketing research agency to field a particular study. After the survey is completed, the research manager analyzes the data and writes the report, which usually includes recommendations for management based on the customer's responses. The research manager's job description also includes presenting research findings to management.

Identification

The research manager's job description also entails studying available secondary information about his industry, analyzing the competition and sometimes calculating market share and market potential, the total units and dollars spent for their types of products. Research managers also study financial data when making their analysis. The research manager's job description also can include writing proposals for new projects, processing billing from outside vendors and helping the research director with the research department's budget.

Considerations

Research managers also perform segmentation studies based on varying results among demographic buying groups. For example, research might show that 35-54 year-olds with high incomes prefer a company's product more than any other demographic group. The research manager would then suggest finding ways to reach this target audience through advertising and promotions. Additionally, the research manager's job description includes handling ad hoc information requests from other department managers or directors, which entails finding data through online searches or available secondary research sources.

Education and Skills

Most research managers are required to have a college education, especially in business administration. However, some employers prefer hiring research managers with master's degrees or MBA's. Additionally, the research manager must be highly analytical, have excellent organizational skills, be knowledgeable about statistics and have excellent writing and speaking skills.
