Types

There are two main types of sales consultants. Employed sales consultants are employed by a company, receiving either commission, salary or both. Some companies offer benefits and bonuses to sales employees. Independent sales consultants are self-employed, promoting self-created products or services or the products or services of a larger company. Independent sales consultants create their own hours and decide how much income they want to generate.

Function

The primary function of a sales consultant is to identify the needs of a customer and provide an opportunity for those needs to be met through the purchase of product or service. Good sales consultants will guide a potential customer to discover his needs and then offer the best possible solution to endure his needs are fulfilled.

More specifically, a sales consultant’s job description may include meeting or exceeding sales quotas; maintaining customer relationships after the sale; managing a sales territory; marketing products and services; making sales calls and contacts with potential and existing customers; creating a customer base; providing service and individual attention to customers; keeping records of all interactions with customers, regardless of the outcome of a sale; remain updated on product knowledge; seek opportunities to consistently learn and train; develop creative sales techniques; grow existing account base; and educate customers through detailed explanations and/or demonstrations.

Misconceptions

Salespeople are stereotyped as commission-hungry, income-driven individuals. However, successful sales consultants are service-oriented, making sure the customer feels confident and proud of his purchase. For them to overcome the negative stereotypes associated with sales, they must provide individual attention to their customers and ensure that every need has been met and exceeded.

According to Spencer Johnson, author of "The One Minute Salesperson," the general public tends to hate to be sold, and it is easy to recognize the selfish salesperson. The good news is that, while people hate to be sold, they love to buy.

To increase sales and referrals, it is essential for sales consultants to personalize all experiences with the customer. To do this, consultants must put themselves in their customers’ shoes and feel what they are feeling throughout the entire sales process. For a salesperson to mentally become their customer, he can easily establish trust and build lasting relationships.
