A general practitioner is a doctor who isn't limited to just one branch of medicine. She is the family doctor.

Duties

The general practitioner is usually the first person that a patient will see if there is a medical need. The doctor is responsible for performing checkups, giving recommendations to the patient, making a preliminary diagnosis in the case of issues, and referring the patient to a specialist if needed.

Training

A general practitioner must go to school for a total of 11 to 16 years before becoming an independent doctor. That includes four years of college, four years of medical school, and a three- to eight-year residency. She must take rigorous courses in science and pass an American Board of Medical Specialists exam.

Work Environment

Family doctors have irregular work habits. It is not uncommon for a family doctor to work more than 60 hours in a week. However, these doctors tend to have more freedom and flexibility in their work hours because they commonly work by appointment.

Skills

A family doctor must have what is called a good "bedside manner" -- a positive attitude toward patients. He must be able to handle pressure and act quickly. He must be committed to lifelong education, as medicine is constantly changing.
